Inspired from the Malay word ‘Arus’ meaning flow or wave, the Perodua Kembara is certainly creating waves as it emerges as the all-new SUV, Perodua Aruz. It has been over a decade since the last launch of a sports utility vehicle from Perodua.
When Perodua opened its doors for booking on January 3rd, over 2,200 bookings have been placed with more currently streaming in. Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said that they were expecting sales of the Aruz to reach up to 2,500 units monthly or 31,200 units by the end of the year.
At the official launching, Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad also highlighted the choice to launch the Aruz being synchronic with the rise of the SUV globally, crediting versatility, comfort, visibility, space and compact footprint as its winning factors.
“Above all, (the Perodua Aruz’s)… appearance projects an active, adventurous and aspirational lifestyle that many desire,”

In this article, we break down some notable features of the Perodua Aruz and if the ride would be truly worth it.
With its aerodynamic body and distinctive accents, the Aruz takes on a bolder style from its original model (Rush and Daihatsu Terios). The rear and front bumpers are enhanced with silver painted diffusers (for the AV) as well as the Chrome and Gloss Black finish on the Backdoor taillights.
The inside of the AV Aruz comes with semi-bucket leather seats and Leather-wrapped steering wheel with Audio and call control.
The Aruz is available in 2 models – the 1.5 X and 1.5 Advance Variant (AV). Both variants come in five colours – Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Electric Blue, Granite Grey and the all-new new Amazon Green.
Build & Drive
The Perodua Aruz will ensure you get ample power and smoother drives for what it’s worth. Both variants are driven by four-speed automatic gearboxes. The engine build is similar to the Rush and Daihatsu Terios which sees the 2NR-VE 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i making it 25% more efficient than its predecessors.
Perodua highly emphasizes its elevated driving experience as the Aruz is equipped with:
- Integrated Driving Video Recorder
- Smart Entry with Smart Key
- Built-in Toll Reader
- Multimedia System with Navigation that links to Android
All convenient features that make driving easier and more navigable. Depending on your needs of the day, the seating arrangement in the Aruz is unsurprisingly flexible, accommodating up to 7 passengers and a generous luggage space for luggage, long items or your day-to-day leisure and sports items.
With 95 per cent of its components sourced locally, the Perodua Aruz is one of a kind being the fourth energy-efficient vehicle, boasting a fuel economy of 15.6 km per litre.
Its progress as an eco-friendly vehicle shines through with other components that make the Aruz an Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV); the Dual VVT-i and Eco Idle (auto start-stop) that reduces fuel consumption and emissions.
A key plus point of the Aruz is Perodua’s efforts in making it safer and supportive in mitigating accidents. So much so that the Aruz was awarded and certified with a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research.
The AV comes with an upgraded version of the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA 2.0) which includes Pre-collision Warning, Pre-collision Braking, Front Departure Alert, Pedal Misoperation Control. What differentiates these safety features from previous models would be its additional pedestrian detection and a speedier Pre-Collision Warning and Pre-Collision Braking to be efficient in operating and responding to hazards.
You can remain assured with other standard security features as following too:
- ISOFIX and Six airbags
- Traction control – improves safety when driving on slippery roads
- Hill-start Assist (HSA) – prevents car from rolling backwards on steep surfaces after the brake is released.
- Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) – automatically activates Hazard Warning Lights during hard braking to alert the drivers of trailing vehicles.
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) – prevents tyres from locking when braking avoiding uncontrollable skids and maintain steering control
- Seat Belt Reminder
- One-touch Power Window with Jam Protection
- Solar & Security Window Film
Comparison and Price
Based on MIDF Research, The Perodua Aruz is expected to be a staunch competitor in the SUV, MPV and crossover segment especially with its price point of RM72,900 and RM77,900 for the 1.5 X and 1.5 AV model respectively. Prices are without insurance but inclusive of a five-year or 150,000 km warranty.
Contending mainly against the SUV range from Honda, Nissan and Toyota, the Aruz will provide plenty of room for car buyers to consider. Despite being the cheapest, it comes with functions such as the LED headlights, keyless entry, a digital air-con controller, and an integrated Toll reader. Should you choose to go for the AV, the model even comes with additional benefits and perks.
To compare on the other hand, the Honda BR-V ranging between RM81,000 – RM88,000 applies similar features for its 1.5V including fog lights, automatic air-cond, leather seats and a rear camera. While the BR-V compensates with more power, its safety aspects fall short of the Aruz as it has only two airbags against six airbags in the Aruz. The BR-V also does not have driver assistance in its safety programme.
However, the Aruz will not pose much competition against the Proton X70 which entails a different price point of RM100,000 to RM124,000.
Buyers who intend to book the Aruz can also rejoice as they can enjoy a free bonus of Perodua Auto Assist benefits applicable to free unlimited unnamed drivers, flood allowance of up to RM1,000 and Personal Accident coverage up to RM10,000 when purchasing the Perodua Total Protect Plus insurance package
